Does the immune system have to switch off for pregnancy to develop?

Dynamics of inflammation and immune tolerance from implantation to the second trimester

No. This is one of the most common myths about reproductive immunology.

The immune system is not physiologically switched off during pregnancy. Its activity changes dynamically depending on the location and stage of pregnancy.

Implantation requires controlled inflammation

At the beginning, a controlled local inflammatory response is needed. It allows the embryo to implant in the endometrium and initiates vascular remodelling.

Tolerance is needed later

At subsequent stages, the immunological balance shifts towards tolerance, supporting placental development and pregnancy. This does not mean general suppression of immunity.

It is not simply about immunity being “too strong” or “too weak”

What matters is appropriate regulation at the right place and time. Immunological diagnosis and treatment should therefore not be applied schematically or reduced to indiscriminate “immune suppression”.

In the book “Does Your Body Support Pregnancy?”, I explain reproductive immunology in language patients can understand: what truly matters, which tests may help and which may lead to unnecessary treatment.
